June is Men’s Health Month

By: Brittany Daniels, Director of Operations & Communications, Health Impact Ohio

Throughout the month of June, Health Impact Ohio participated in the sharing of content in support of Men’s Health Month. This month centered on education and encouragement, was a time to highlight the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices to improve the health of boys and men.

As the month comes to an end, we would like to share a list of resources that can be utilized when addressing men’s health and the improvement of health outcomes and health literacy in boys and men.

To learn more about health disparities impacting men, view this infographic from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources Office of Minority Health.

To learn more about top health concerns for men as they age, view this survey conducted by the Cleveland Clinic.

To learn more about national men’s health statistics, view this Fast Stats page from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As a Regional Healthcare Improvement Collaborative, we also acknowledge the importance of education and awareness activities on the local level to aid in the improvement of health for boys and men. In Central Ohio, local agencies like the National African American Wellness Agency provide health screenings, health educations programs, and health awareness campaigns to help “reduce disparities in premature death and chronic diseases among African American (AA) males” (https://aawellness.org/about-us/). Each year they host an annual Walk to Save Black Lives in Columbus, as well as many other cities across the U.S. To learn more about their mission and events, view their website here: https://aawellness.org/.

The Columbus, OH walk will take place on August 12, 2023. Check out the video below to learn about the 2023 National “Close The Gap” campaign. Learn more about the Columbus, OH walk here: https://aawellness.org/columbus-ohio/.

As part of the 2023 campaign, Better Health Through Better Understanding, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health has created a landing page where information can be found about their focus on providing culturally and linguistically competent healthcare services, information, and resources to improve health outcomes for racial and ethnic minority and AI/AN communities. To view toolkits and other Minority Health resources, view their landing page here: https://www.minorityhealth.hhs.gov/nmhm/.

Health Impact Ohio works to improve the health of all individuals in every community, and we look forward to continuing to participate in the sharing of education and access to resources with our communities from partners at the local and national levels.
